Getting into FIFO · Entry roles

Choose the job before buying tickets.

FIFO is a roster and travel arrangement. The entry threshold depends on the work: a village cleaner, a driller's offsider and a haul truck trainee need different evidence. Compare the actual vacancy and point of hire before spending on training.

Nine entry pathways

Where your existing experience may fit.

Indicative gross annual bands are editorial estimates, generally before super. They are not starting offers; hours, roster, employer and experience change the result.

Maintenance

Trade Assistant →

$85k–$125k annual cash

Support a qualified trade within a clear task boundary.

Transferable evidence
Workshop, labouring, tool or material-handling experience
Tickets and checks
White Card if the work is construction; heights, confined space, forklift or dogging only for the assigned tasks
Look at
Shutdown and maintenance contractors, labour hire
Village services

Camp utility / housekeeping →

$65k–$95k annual cash

Cleaning, dining, laundry and camp duties are distinct from production work.

Transferable evidence
Hospitality, commercial cleaning, kitchen or customer service
Tickets and checks
Food handling or RSA only for the relevant duty; driver licence for driving roles
Look at
Village, catering and facilities contractors
Drilling

Driller's offsider →

$90k–$120k annual cash

Physically demanding; compare surface and underground vacancies carefully.

Transferable evidence
Physical outdoor work, safe manual handling and roster reliability
Tickets and checks
Manual C-class licence is common; HR, coal or underground requirements depend on the program
Look at
Exploration and drilling contractors
Exploration & laboratory

Sample preparation technician →

$75k–$92k annual cash

Some jobs are town-based rather than FIFO.

Transferable evidence
Careful process work, accurate labelling and data entry
Tickets and checks
Laboratory dust and machine training; mine induction if site-based
Look at
Commercial assay laboratories and mine-site labs
Logistics

Storeperson / warehouse assistant →

$72k–$90k annual cash

Inventory accuracy and critical-spares handling matter.

Transferable evidence
Retail stock, warehouse or inventory systems
Tickets and checks
LF high-risk work licence when operating a forklift; other duties may not require it
Look at
Operators, contractors and village logistics teams
Business support

Site administrator →

$75k–$105k annual cash

Prior office skills can transfer without mining experience.

Transferable evidence
Office, travel, rostering or workforce-coordination experience
Tickets and checks
Privacy, systems and site induction; licence if driving is assigned
Look at
Mine operators, project contractors and villages
Operations support

Production support labourer →

$65k–$95k annual cash

This is not an automatic heavy-plant operating licence.

Transferable evidence
Industrial labouring, process or civil support
Tickets and checks
Task and plant verification; White Card only where construction work applies
Look at
Mine operators and production or civil contractors
Trainee operations

Haul truck trainee →

$80k–$115k annual cash

Intakes are competitive and location-specific.

Transferable evidence
Named new-to-industry intake and strong safety evidence
Tickets and checks
Employer machine training and verification; do not buy a generic haul-truck ticket on faith
Look at
Operators and mining contractors when trainee intakes open
Passenger transport

Village bus driver →

$85k–$105k annual cash

Usually needs prior driving competence, so it is a licence-led path.

Transferable evidence
Passenger driving and customer-service experience
Tickets and checks
Correct MR/HR class, passenger authorisation where required; some combined jobs also need LF
Look at
Village and workforce-transport contractors

Before applying

Build the shortest useful evidence pack.

01

Check eligibility and point of hire

Confirm work rights, departure city, roster and travel costs. Interstate travel to the departure city is not always covered.

02

Read the exact requirements

A White Card applies to construction work, not every mine job. Queensland coal induction and coal medical rules are separate from WA iron ore. Police checks, licence classes and medical assessments follow the employer and role.

03

Show transferable work

Put relevant licences and current evidence near the top of your resume. Name real tasks, shift work and safety habits; use supervisors who can verify them.

04

Apply through the right employer

Search village contractors for camp work, drilling companies for offsider intakes, laboratories for sample preparation, and operators or contractors for trainee campaigns. Set alerts and check official careers pages.

Pay and progression in context.

Compare the full offer: base or hourly rate, paid hours, overtime, night shifts, super, allowances, travel days, meals and accommodation. A 2/1 drilling roster and an 8/6 site-services roster cannot be compared by headline annual pay alone. Use the salary and roster calculator, then confirm the actual offer with the employer and the applicable minimum with Fair Work.

These jobs can lead to trade apprenticeships, drilling, laboratory, supply, administration, village leadership or plant operation. Movement depends on vacancies, training and demonstrated competence. A Heavy Rigid licence or short course alone does not qualify someone to operate a mine's haul truck or loader.
