Australian mine at dusk representing technical and business support careers
← Six role families

Role family 06

Technical and business support careers.

A mine depends on more than production crews and trades. Technical services shape the plan and manage uncertainty; business and site-support teams keep people, materials, contracts and remote operations working.

The core idea

Support roles still need operational credibility.

Engineers, geologists, surveyors and HSE professionals turn specialist evidence into decisions. Supply, procurement, people, administration and camp teams make sure the workforce and work fronts have what they need.

Many roles can be site based, FIFO, residential, Perth or Brisbane office based, or hybrid. The roster arrangement should never be confused with the occupation itself.

The strongest support professionals can explain how their work changes a decision at the mine—not just which system they used.

Where the work sits

Capability foundations

Five foundations that make specialist support useful.

Verify current qualification, licensing, mine, employer and task requirements before paying for training.

01 · Discipline

Know the professional boundary

A degree, certificate or position title defines a starting point. Assigned authority and competence still depend on the work and jurisdiction.

02 · Operations

Understand the mine system

Recommendations become useful when they reflect production, maintenance, logistics, people and field constraints.

03 · Evidence

Protect data quality

Technical, people, commercial and inventory decisions all depend on traceable, current and appropriately controlled information.

04 · Stakeholders

Translate across functions

Strong support work connects specialist evidence with the people who approve, execute and live with the decision.

05 · Outcome

Close the loop

A report, hire, purchase order or recommendation is incomplete until ownership, action and verification are clear.

Career map

Progress from disciplined support to trusted decision authority.

Progression is not automatic. It comes from broader competence, stronger evidence and accountability other people can verify.

  1. 01

    Foundation

Build the relevant qualification, systems skill and practical work discipline.

  2. 02

    Operational context

Learn the mine, commodity, assets, stakeholders and decision cycle.

  3. 03

    Independent delivery

Own defined analysis, service, contract, workforce or site-support outcomes.

  4. 04

    Senior or specialist

Handle greater complexity, assurance, mentoring and cross-functional influence.

  5. 05

    Technical or functional lead

Set direction, govern quality, develop capability and carry broader business accountability.

Technical

Engineer · geologist · surveyor · reliability

Progression follows stronger analysis, field context, professional judgement and accountability for technical decisions.

Risk & commercial

HSE · environment · contracts · supply

Credibility comes from evidence quality, practical controls, stakeholder ownership and disciplined governance.

People & services

HR · recruitment · logistics · village services

The path grows through dependable service, workforce understanding, problem solving and leadership of distributed teams.

The evidence test

Connect specialist work to a mine decision.

Software and qualifications matter, but employers also need the operating context, evidence quality, stakeholders, recommendation, action and verified outcome.

Too vague

“Provided technical support and worked with key stakeholders.”

More useful

“Reviewed repeat conveyor bearing failures using work history and condition data, validated the failure pattern with the maintenance crew, recommended a revised inspection task and tracked the first three completed cycles with the planner.”

Important boundaries

Shortcuts that do not hold up.

01

“Support roles are all office based.”

Many roles require regular field verification, site engagement and rostered presence; others support operations remotely or through hybrid arrangements.

02

“A degree grants site authority.”

Qualifications support professional capability. Mine, legal, system-access and appointment authorities remain separate.

03

“HSE owns safety.”

HSE professionals advise, facilitate and assure. Operational leaders and duty holders retain their defined responsibilities.

04

“Lower salary means lower importance.”

Salary reflects market scarcity, conditions and job design—not the operational value or dignity of the work.
